Turn-of-the-Century Hospitality.

490 Summit was designed by architect Clarence H. Johnston in 1883 for A. G. Foster. The threestory brick and wood structure can be classified as a Romanesque building. Johnston used a great variety of design elements in the building including a prominent step gable and round-arch windows. Foster’s home was constructed in conjunction with his friend and business partner Chauncey Griggs, who built his house next door. These adjacent mansions share a unique joint carriage house where the builders lived during the construction of the homes. A. G. Foster was engaged in the thriving Twin Cities lumber business and also served as a U.S. Senator. After a number of prominent owners, 490 Summit was converted to a special occasion venue in 1963 which continues to this day.
